Matthäus Bussmann was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and grew up being inspired by films and their reflection of an ever-changing youth culture. Reading books about the making of his favorite TV series caught his imagination, and he never looked back.
Capturing his friends on camera since he was 10 years old, he amassed hundreds of hours
of footage before finishing school. Intrigued by the stories of their lives, he set out to tell their stories. He is of Italian and German descent, combining passion with pragmatism and fascinated by seeing scenes through multiple perspectives.
He has a distinctive visual style yet he avoids repeating himself by fluidly shifting between the genres. No matter what product he is doing a commercial for, what always connects his work is the contemporary shoot style and the expressive yet genuine performances he captures. No matter if he is casting real people, professional actors, or models, through his intimate lens they always appear with a radiant presence and striking approachability. His constant observation and passionate understanding of the ZEITGEIST, made him strive to tell the stories of his generation –be it via hundreds of commercials for Volkswagen, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, T-Mobile, Pepsi, Coca Cola, Bayer, Reebok and many others, or dozens of music videos.
Easy going and the calm in the centre of the storm, he knows how to make a set function and always has an eye for the bigger picture. Coming from an editorial background enables him to holistically consider all aesthetic factors for his projects– be it the perfect sound or a unique montage technique. Sound and Editing is never just something that is being added at the end, but always planned in and considered during the whole process. Driven by his innate curious sense to tell a story, and to start using his skills for longer formats he is as excited and passionate as he was picking up a camera for the first time, many years ago.
His professionalism and pragmatism have made him an internationally sought after Director. He currently lives with his wife and two kids in Frankfurt and works all over the world.
